In all my strapping bikes and quads to trailers, trucks and racks, I have never had any strap problems. Nor have I ever lost a shock seal on anything.
When tie downs are starting to look a little ratty, replace them......

Yours is the ultimate for 4x4 lockdown. My Buddy's van is done the same way, not exactly but same concept of using the two hitches. He squishes his bike down with tie downs, not exactly good but it really locks the bike down.

I don't think there is anything better. It's no fun seeing your bike swing back and forth on some of those trails.
tie downs on the handlebars and one over the rear wheel, couple of wheel tie downs front and rear like these http://store.rampconnection.com/product.php?xProd=6911 and we are good to go......
