17" tires and wheels for 2018 Sprinter

October 1st I ordered a 4X4 2018 Sprinter hopefully to get it sometime in April. I am in the process of purchasing my accessories and I wanted to go to a 17" wheel and Goodrich tires. Would like to have some suggestions it will be used off road 20% of the time.

The standard SMB upgrade is to Method wheels with BFG All Terrain T/A KO2 265-70R17, (31.6"x10.43") 10 Ply, Load Range E. I am very satisfied with this combination, both at highway speed and off road. Anything much larger will require spacers and/or lift.

Fitz, thanks for the help with the wheels and tires. I checked them out today and definitely leaning in that direction.

Hey there Fitz

if we ever get our Sprinter 170 EB 4x4 and have it upfitted
.... we'll be broke and upgrading tires will be a good thing for boondocking, dirt roads, etc....

but i dont think i could justify Method wheels.

other than better looks, are there any benefits to the Method wheels?

thanks

john

Wheel width. The standard wheel that comes with the Sprinter is 6.5” wide.

The Method standard wheel is 7.5” wide.

A 265/70/17 tire is specified to be mounted on a rim width of 7” to 8.5”.

Don’t quote me on this (I am not in a place where I can easily look it up), but I recall that you can fit up to a 285 on a 7.5” wide wheel. Beyond that a wider wheel is called for.

Many put wider-than-rated tires on existing wheels to good effect. That’s a personal decision we all get to make.
