220 California State Parks to close.

I was at McConnell state park the other day and found out it was to close due to the economic state of California. There are many more including very busy parks such as Red Rock, Sea Cliff, Bodie, and even Jedediah state park. My guess is that Red Rock will stay closed forever due to environmentalists false concerns about that squirrel and the local tortoise. But look at the list; 220 parks to close? I’m not going to go political but there are several other ways to balance the budget w/o closing so many parks especially those that are money makers. Typical Ca BULL!

Hopefully this won't happen. Ya right.

I saw that my favorite place, Anza Borrego was on the list.. probably just the park part and not the Ocotillo side.

Probably ok for that location, there will be less Rangers..

Do you think they'll try to barb wire the whole thing?? Probably not.

Daveb: Sorry, you started this. California voters have backed their state into a corner by embracing voodoo economics through a long series of idiotic ballot proposals that inevitably led to legislative stalement and a budget disaster. It's either higher taxes or less services, not less taxes and more services. Who's the next quick-fix movie star governor? Now, having started the flame wars, I'm heading to the bomb shelter. - Rusty

Re: 220 California State Parks to close.

It's about spending money wisely. Our taxes are being wasted. This SP issue has a bit to do with the nation’s monetary problems but California’s been on this road for much longer than that and in fact much longer than Schwarzenegger has been in office. Californians are being raped by out of control spending and idiotic bureaucracy by certain groups due to the politics going on in Sacramento and it makes me sick. I’m not saying cutbacks don’t have to be made in the state parks system, but priorities are messed up and Sacramento even uses the Feds to manipulate some items for a few special interest groups. State parks are not the reason California is in the shape it is; state parks are a super thin piece of the pie. I won't comment on the big chunk of the pie that needs to be fixed because that is for other forums.
I’m done.

Re: 220 California State Parks to close.

I'm mildly irritated about it, but only mildly. I mean, it's a total economic crisis, if not collapse. I'd rather see parks closed for some time than schools. Of course, schools seem to be getting cut anyway....

The one thing I'll note is that they're being closed, but not SOLD. Thus, in 5-10 years when they reopen, other than needing a lot of trail and facility work to bring them back up, there will also be growth covering the cross-cut trails, and nature will have come back in a bit.

The one I'll miss the most is Henry Coe. Fantastic mountain biking, and not bad casual backpacking close to home, either. You can bike for 5+ hours on a holiday weekend, and see maybe 10 people.

So I'm curious what exactly "CLOSED" means... illegal to even enter, or just not maintained?

What I see as the real danger is then they'll then be viewed as virgin land, and there will be huge push by environmental groups to keep them that way.

Herb
Secret agenda Herb? Very possibly.

I was hoping on a scaled back plan such as weekends open, weekdays closed. Most parks are located close to several others. The state must be thinking of layoffs. I don't wish that on any workers but if weekends were kept open, cleanup could be done with a smaller compliment of personal during the week. The true money is made on the weekends during spring through fall and in fact the workers (not the specialist people) at McConnell SRA were surprised of the closure because of the high revenue brought in at this time of the year. One ranger is covering several parks. I still wonder if the upper management is top heavy; I know I’ve been told by the park workers that they are the people that are needed to run the parks, but they don’t want to be laid off either. How much you wanna bet they lay off all the standard park workers but keep all the environmental and upper management people. Not to offend anybody, but when I see how the postal service and the DMV are ran, I wonder. I work for a government agency and see it in my company and hell I’m no saint either. I’ve set up several useless brainstorm meetings that were a waste of time in my own opinion. I joined AAA just to avoid the DMV because triple A is so much more efficient or at least it seems so. I hate to see the state turn over the parks to a private organization, but maybe as a temporary fix? It might be the best short term solution as long as the state keeps out of it while it’s being ran privately. Just make sure they give it back the way they got it.
Anybody got the bucks to run a state park?

Re: 220 California State Parks to close.

That's a real shame. My folks just visited Bodie this morning, and we love to go to Point Lobos. My concern is what is going to happen to them while the are closed--which, hopefully, will be temporary. Enormous damage could be done.
