84 MPG Just needs a poptop! (no it's not 4x4)

Is anyone else thinking of buying an Elio? Anyone bought one of the prepurchase yet?

It's basically a covered trike motorcycle, but since 90% of our driving right now is solo to the grocery or whatever- including the .25 miles to the mailbox, I'm seriously thinking this could be a good vehicle for our household. Not that I have garage space, and I already am two years overdue selling the Jeep.. but, well, thoughts?

It's basically a front engine trikercycle:

We read up on them.

Good news is they have "best in class" safety."
Bad news is the class is "motorcycles."

We are looking at Chevy Volts because our commute could be electric only. And if you use the 120v slow charger, SMUD gives you a discount on your electric bill for your entire house.

Re: 84 MPG Just needs a poptop! (no it's not 4x4)

Does it have a proprietary motor and transmission, or is it sourced from a motorcylce manufacturer? If proprietary, I would be concerned about long-term supportability with a start-up company like this.

How does it compare (price, space and MPG wise) to something like a Smart car?

If you get one, please have your wife take a picture of you inside it and post it here.

How do helmet laws apply to an enclosed motorcycle??

Looks cute. And seriously more fun than a Smart car (which doesn't get great mileage).

The owner of Elio Motors was interviewed on the Lars Larson program. The high mpg apparently comes from the fact that the driver and passenger sit in-line rather than side-by-side (like a smart car). Half the width results in half the wind resistence.

Plus little things like having only one door, where the smart needs two. Plus the smart is, what, double the price?

If I wanted fun and cool I'd go with the Abarth Fiat...

If I wanted fun, I get a GTI. Test drove a couple, damn right exciting. The salesman could see I liked it and got excited! I told him "No way, I'd lose my license!"

Bought tamer GLI instead. Still a lot of fun, but less aggressive ans less of a ticket magnet.
