Re: Baja Question

Mike

I bought the GS when my orthopedic surgeon told me my right knee couldn't take the stress of bicycle touring anymore. I was pulling all my gear in a BOB trailer. I went from being able to travel 60 miles a day to 600 miles a day. There is something about traveling on two wheels where you are more exposed to sounds and smells that keeps me going back for more. I can afford to do a lot more things now but I keep turning back to two wheel travel. There is something special to me about waking up in a campground somewhere with no plans for the day other than to check the weather and decide which direction looks best.

There are endless roads that still need explored.

Re: Baja Question

I totally agree. Travel on 4 wheels is like watching a movie - if it snows you see it on the screen. When on a motorcycle you are there in real life. You feel the sun, the cool of the shadows, you feel the rain, smell the trees, feel the breezes and every dog is potentially a death sentence. You have watch the road carefully for gravel, oil etc. that are meaningless to a 4 wheeler.

It is sad to realize the nights spent in my mobile motel are more important than the days spent in the saddle.

Must be old age talking.

Re: Baja Question

Let me recommend the best way to avoid PITA border towns.

Cross at Tecate
Hwy 2 Toll Road or Free Road to south of Mexicali
Hwy 5 to San Felipe
South to Puerecitos
South to Gonzaga Bay
South through Coco's Corner to Hwy 1
Bahia De Los Angeles...

In other words stay off Hwy 1 up north - too much traffic...

That is certainly the case with me too. It is a lifelong theme. Today it is the MTB and bikes in general, but I'm sure that someday I'll go back to motorcycles.

Have a great time in Baja. I've put a lot of fond miles on my xr400 down there.

That is classic. I'm reminiscing about 'Up in Smoke' right now.

Re: Baja Question

I'm gettin the GS dialed in for the upcoming vacation. I ran up to Touratech USA in Seattle on Friday (170 miles) and picked up a new rear shock. I have to wait another week or so for the front shock. The run on Friday was a shake down ride after getting a bunch of work done on the bike at BMW of Western Oregon. The bike feels great and I can't wait to test the new suspension. The new rear shock was 2.1 pounds lighter than the stock shock. Kind of a surprise bonus.

No performance awards on the ride was also a bonus since my max speed northbound was 93mph and 95mph southbound. To much fun!!!

Out with the old in with the new
