KEEP YOUR FOOD IN A COOLER???? Obvously, who ever wrote that has never had a bear in his camp. Do they think a cooler will keep a bear out of your food? Pretty silly.
Yeah I read that . I watched a group of dummies do the same thing at Tenaya Lake walk-in camp in YNP...I asked how they'd been gettin away with leaving it out and they said bears can't smell through an ice chest. Bear came in that night and it sounded like someone driving a car into a dumpster over and over. Stuff was scattered for more than 500 feet.

Even though I think my Yeti coolers are rated as griz proof, my guess is most national parks with bears would have specific rules about outside storage and probably frown on leaving even those types out overnight.

we regularly keep our food (if outside the van) in an 80qt Engle Deep Blue cooler. They are IGB certified "Bear Proof" and I do believe that is the case...AS LONG as you put the paddle locks on the lid! Otherwise its an easy snack for a curious bear.

I was riding a 4wheeler on Prince of Whales island yesterday when I came flying around a corner to discover I was chasing a pretty good sized black bear down the trail. When he turned to look at me, I had the wheels locked up but fortunately he kept going and I turned around. I hate to think what might have happened if I'd hit him.

Just read this news. We saw a ton of bears when we were up that way last year.

Had a similar experience outside of Foresthill CA last summer. We were in a 4wd truck (Sprinter SMB being built in Austin as we speak) going down the road when a black bear popped out on the road in front of us. Clocked him at a steady 30 mph for at least a half a mile before he decided he had enough and he dropped down the bank on the downhill side. One of the reasons we all go where we go and do what we do - BEAUTIFUL!

Bears can be a dramatic (and even terrifying) problem, while rodents are more ...mundane.

The analogy I use for a lot of things is flying. The thought of a plane crash can be frightening, but in reality you are far more likely to fall victim to the mundane- the drive to the airport.
