Best Campground Ever

WVvan's thread on worst campgrounds ever got me thinking that there needs to be an equal and opposite thread to his regarding the best campgrounds ever. I always say the best camping spot is one where there is no one else around, but one of the best experiences I've had camping with others is at Toroweap CG in the Grand Canyon with Mike, Rick, Alex, Lake, Ruth, Chris, Steve and Robert in Sept 2010.

Re: Best Campground Ever

I always thought I a loner while out in the backcountry…until I went to a group meet with folks from this Forum. I really enjoyed the trip above Fresno at Sample Meadow CG The campground might not have been the best, but the company was great and is something I’ll never forget. Still, I enjoy a trip up there in late October each year.

I know you asked for a single CG but after Labor day, a CG that always puts a smile on my face is Tamarack Flat in Yosemite.

It’s usually vacant and finding a spot without people is no problem. Of course every now and then someone has to pick the camp right next to you even though there are open sites all over the place.

My favorite local summer spot has got to be Leavitt Lake. Although not a full fledge CG, it seems like a spread out camp or busy boon dock spot. The spaces are very far apart from each other. At least I can beat the hottest days of the year up there plus the fishing is good.

My #1 winter camp is probably Merced River Canyon
The temps are fairly mild and early winter to spring is great. People usually don’t start rolling in until the weather warms into the 70’s around Feb.

A good snow camp (provided it's plowed) is Hodgdon Meadow. It's one spot that is usually empty when everything else is closed.

Some campgrounds say "No RVs/Trailers". In these cases does one assume that a Sportsmobile is just a van and not an RV? Then if it's RVs only ... the Sportsmobile is an RV?

Sounds logical to me.

Absolutely. Not that anyone would want to go in an RV only campground. It's also 20 or 19 feet long as necessary.

Re: Best Campground Ever

Well, I figured Mac was talking about best CG for a Sportsmobile considering he has one. I'd still like to find that perfect "on the beach CG" that doesn't jam you right next to the site closest to you. Leavitt Lake is not for a 2wd vehicle and some SMB's could never get in there...so maybe it doesn't count either.

Re: Best Campground Ever

Correct! The "worst campgrounds" stream is for the best (or worst) campgrounds for gang bangers, noisy city-slickers, drunken parties, RVers who are so afraid to camp alone they park their big rig next to the tent in an otherwise empty campground, etc. I want to make sure I stay hundreds of miles away from those places.

Perhaps saying "campground" is a misnomer. I really mean camping spots -- particularly out of the way spots that only people like us Sportsmobiliers get to enjoy because of our wonderful rigs. To me there is nothing more pleasant than being somewhere outdoors where most people never get to go. That's why I have an SMB!

Re: Best Campground Ever

Ah...now if you're talking best boon docking spots, that's a different story. Although I have plenty, some have just got to be kept secret. Besides, we already have that in the subscriber's area section "post your campsite info" where I'm more likely to divulge some of my favorite spots.
(Note to non members, only subscribers can see that area, so if you haven't donated, you won't be able to access that part of the forum)

I think it is hard to beat the Teklanika Campground in Denali NP.
