BFG Tread Separation

BFG tread separation at 70 mph was unkind to my Sportsmobile.

Decent tread left on the culprit, I think.

At any rate, does anyone know where I can find a single fender flare and single replacement rim/wheel?

Thanks,

Sean

Sucks indeed. The top two lugnuts may not be shiny, but they're all there.

That is why I'm not buying any more BFGs.

Did you notice a vibration before the separation?
Had you checked the air pressure recently?
Do you know the history of the tires? (both sets that bulged on me were previously owned by others)

Sorry to see that happen to your van!

Interesting that it looks like it happened on the left rear driver's side wheel, which from previous discussions appears to frequently carry the highest weight on many SMBs. Several owners have moved up to E range tires just for an extra safety factor.

Just curious, but have people had this happen on something other than the driver's side rear tire?

I’m going with a different brand load range E tires when I replace them. Only problem is – now I have a practically new set.

Yes, I did - a noticeable vibration. In fact, my son was in the back watching a DVD (buckled up, of course, but with a lap belt). I had him come to the front seat and buckle up. It was night and I planned to stop at the next exit to inspect. I had the van in mud recently (in fact you can still see a bit on the rim). I was hoping that I just lost a wheel weight, but suspected that it was a tire. Lesson learned - Slow way down and limp in for inspection if the van begins to vibrate.

Yes, the pressure was 80 psi all around per the door panel sticker. I do have a heavier van and should be running Es.

These tires were on the van when I acquired it. I could tell that this one was rotated from the front from the wear. It was slightly more worn on the inside. I estimated that it had a decent amount of tread/life left, but it was noticeably more used than the other three. In short, no I didn’t know the history.

Thanks, it’ll be back on the road soon, and has seen worse damage. That’s a whole ‘nother story though.

If it is the Ford factory sticker on the door panel, that is for the Ford factory tires. You should check the tires and they should have the "maximimum cold psi" stamped on the side. My tires are 50 or 50 psi stamped on the side (D range).

If you'd visually inspected the tire you would have seen a bulge where the tread was seperating, that is if you're lucky and it is on top like my driver's side rear on the SMB this happened to- at 55 mph.

If you're not you could get lucky again and after stopping twice make your dad get out and watch the tire (as happened with my f250 left front the first time).

Or it could be a false alarm, like when a dealership didn't latch the hood on my SMB.

I'm planning to upgrade to 17s so I can get and E range in 35" from Toyo.

80 PSI? That seems high. On my e-rated tires I run 62-65 max. Maybe I need to look at my tires.

Depends on the tire size I believe. I'm still running the stock 245/75/16 and they are supposed to be run at 80 psi in the rear (70 psi in the front I believe). However, larger tires will probably have a lower psi requirement.
