Re: California DMV fees
Mmm, contracted ownership of your Sportsmobile. Might be time to move to Montana.

Yeah, we'll just all sign the titles of our SMB's over to Ed, and then borrow them back from him. What could go wrong?
Seriously though, if I could find an equivalent job in Montana, we'd be there in a heartbeat.

Heck, I work part-time at Port Hueneme, although it's all on the computer screen from Montana! Could you check out one of those clean up sites near the harbor for me while you are out there Herb? I could also use some decent sushi fedexed back here if you have the time...

Re: California DMV fees
DO NOT try this in California! As far as I know, ANY vehicle that is in the state of California for longer than twenty consecutive days Must be registered in CA. YES, that means that if you spend three weeks in Ca. on vacation, on the twenty first day your vehicle (and you yourself if you have an out of state drivers license), are here in violation of CA law! The state
of California has no sense of humor regarding this!
I have a friend who has a ranch in Hamilton MT and a home in Carmel, CA and a CA D.L. He got stopped last Summer for a minor traffic infraction here in CA and he had a CA D.L. and a MT registered pickup, and when the cop asked him how long he had been in CA, he said five weeks. Even though he lives and owns property in MT, he had to pay a huge fine and register his truck in CA. Then he had to take it back to MT (where it lived) and re-register it in MT. All this cost him THOUSANDS of dollars!. California, which I love and have lived in for 63 years, positively sucks when dealing with the government. ( This sort of sounds like the tirade I was on about the Canadian Government a few days ago; sorry!)

Re: California DMV fees
One of my ideas was to give the van to my dad, let him register it in Iowa. Then have him sign a paper allowing me to use his van.
I couldn't register it, it's not mine.
Of course, I also need a note gifting the van to me (undated) in case a disaster strikes dad.
I'm going to have to give this some serious thought.

Re: California DMV fees
A co-title might solve the inheritance problem... as long as you didn't go at nearly the same time. You'd have to choose where to register it since you live in different states...

Actually, Colorado and New Mexico were our first choices, but couldn't seem to break into the job market there (senior level DoD engineer/manager). Still thinking a move to Virginia is going to happen, but it's taking much longer than expected.
Grand Junction was high on my list of places to live, but Colorado Springs was our second choice in CO and it had many more opportunities for me, and even that didn't pan out.

How can it be $1200 a year for a license plate fee? You talking about yearly registration tags? You pay $600 a year for your tags? I paid all my taxes when i registered the rig for the full amount. Im confused.

I just paid my 2009 California registration fee today:
Registration Fee = $56
License Fee = $624 (tax deductible part)
Special Plate fee = $70
County Fee = $10
Total = $760
I can hardly wait till next year when they double it.
