Re: Camp Knife

I have tried many different types of thin folding knives, but always come back to the Benchmade Mel Pardue Axis types, either the 350, which I wish I could still find, or the 530. They are just so nice and compact.

I also, just for kicks, got a short Kabar - not a primo knife, but a good size and a lot more useful than a regular Kabar.

I got one of those Blind Horse Bush Baby's coming, after I saw the link from Wilson and liked the shape. They said it would take 30 days. I'm a bit sad that they no longer offer it with the wooden grip, but black resin will have to do.

I also have a machete sitting around somewhere that I sometimes camp with, but have not really ever used. An axe comes in more handy. What kind of hatchets do you folks carry?

I have used both a classic Estwing and a small Gerber.

Re: Camp Knife

For everyday carry, one can't beat a Benchmade Griptillian...I've got three of them, in different versions. Prefer the Doug Ritter RSK blade(S30v). Axis lock, strong locking mechanism, can be opened/closed one-handed, great knife. The nice thing about Benchmade is that if you aren't into sharpening your knives, for $5 they'll refurbish and sharpen your knife. Great deal IMHO.

I've also got knives from Busse(spendy, but will last a lifetime and Chris Reeve(check out their new folders) that I use often. Check out www.bladeforums.com if you want to drop lots of cash...

Beak you made the list! ...of people who made me spend money- finally found that knife for my niece. If it's a good camp knife I might buy another for the van.

Re: Camp Knife

I have been looking for a nice fixed blade and pretty close to buying a Becker BK2

I have two hatchets in my van, a coleman and a Estwing 26" Camp Axe, I haven't used the Estwing yet, don't care much for the coleman, I think batoning with a fixed blade would be more efficient for creating kindling.

Re: Camp Knife

Jage: mmmm...most lists that I'm on are not good so this is refreshing. That looks like is a sweet knife. Enjoy

Stiggs: The BK2 will get the job done with room to spare. Its thick....really thick so it reminds me of a drop point-sharpened-crowbar...I like that.

I'll go along with that.

Along with my just received Damascus bladed Benchmade with desert ironwood bolsters - #69 of 250 made. Not for everyday carry!

Re: Camp Knife

"Camp Knife" is 3 weeks old but I just got our van out of winter storage this week.

As far as at camp with an SMB you can carry most anything. My favorite knives are really 1095 carbon steel Old Hickory. They do require sharpening and handle sanding and oiling when new but fairly good knives after that at a very low price.

Our "camp knives" for in camp. They are 1095 carbon steel so they will oxidize.

A pair of 40+ year old ones from out kitchen. Getting warn, black, but still razor sharp w one or two passes on a sharpening rod.

Or "back country" knives. Used for everything from camp chores, opening cans, to cutting food. A his and her set of Explorer Black Claw 440C stainless steel folding knives. Probably only $25 each. Can be put away wet and dirty. Really with most our travels now done in a SMB van they are used very little
