I disagree. Fire, food and water goes a long way. Every few years in the PNW it seems someone ends up stranded stranded and are not found sometimes years later. Iridium phone is also on my list, if the yearly fee was not in the $600 range. Plus a helpful deterrent should someone get the wrong idea. This topic has been well covered in another thread.

How about an AA-12 then? Neither get you anything but food and defense, but at least you could take the shells of the AA-12 down and get fire, maybe.

You can dig with a knife (water), make figure 4 deadfall traps (food), make shelter, and in between go for small game with the slingshot- which won't make fire, but has a virtually unlimited supply of ammo, and is pretty effective for self defense as well. Apart from that they're ounces to lug around, and; in my opinion- planning to survive by elk steak is not really reasonable.
