Collecting

Lots of people collect things.

I have a collection of motorcycle/sidecar toys. Sidecar stuff is hard to find.

I also have ~100 1/18th scale metal model cars. There are now too many cars available and I haven't bought any in awhile.

What do you collect????

Mike

Re: Collecting

Well Mike other than weight, not a whole lot. I used to collect date nails out of poles and I still have an insulator collection. I must say, when looking around the house a lot has to go. Much of it is RV stuff I've never used.

Re: Collecting

Interesting topic. Christine and I have been UN-collecting, actively, since the '08 downturn. Post-recession, I have noticed that none of the local parasitic industries (property tax collector, business/auto/home/health insurance, government/regulatory/enforcement, etc x 3) experienced any impact, emotionally or economically, they just go to the office and count up the proceeds each day which come directly from my (your) labors.

SOooo, we started selling off "stuff", including a variety of collections. We decided that if we live close-to-the-ground, it won't hurt so bad to fall. We now live in a 576 ft/sq house and are trying to figure out if we are tough enough to live in a 114 ft/sq van. I have 9,948 ft/sq listed with a real estate agent, currently. I'm just carrying too many fleas. I'm collecting my wits now!

P.S. yep, that rant is a rant, but it is intended to make us all think about what is worth collecting

Re: Collecting

I collect too much crap. over the next few months I plan to sell a bunch of it, including our current racecar. most of my junk is car/racing related. its gotten out of hand. need to sell a good portion of it, specifically for a top for the van.

when i lost my job in 07, i decided to sell my old bmx bike that i had been holding onto for no real reason. luckily for me, vintage bmx crap was skyrocketing. i was able to sell a bike i paid a grand for in the 80's for just shy of 3k. i even got 500 bucks just from all my old magazines...i was floored. after the mags sold, i went to the garage and grabbed every last old bmx part i had and put it on ebay too. cleared some space in the garage, and put some coin in my unemployed pocket

now im collecting van and van related camping stuff...go figure.

Re: Collecting

I'm in de-collecting mode. I make regular runs to Goodwill to drop stuff off. I could probably Craigslist or E-bay the stuff but it's just not worth the hassle. I still have way to much stuff and it's going to take a while for me to get rid of it. Anyone need a few boxes of bicycle parts?

There will come a point when you no longer own your stuff, it owns you.

I guess I haven't reached that point yet.

For me, you get rid of stuff when you move. I haven't moved in 20 years, maybe it is time.

Re: Collecting

Like wat my buddy said; if you haven't used it in 10 years, get rid of it. I mean certain things like tools not make the list and I still don't want to sell my 67 Camaro.

ya, so true. im in the same boat. reminds of an old episode of that 70's show where kelso snags a pair of donnas panties and says something like "a collector never stops collecting."

Mike

For me your stuff owns you when you spend most of your time at work earning money to pay for your stuff. House payment, car payment, credit card payment, boat payment and motorcycle payments all add up to to much time dedicated to making money and not enough time enjoying life.

Life is to short not to enjoy it. That's a lesson I learned after losing 60% of my immediate family over a 3 year period 15 years ago.

Just my 2.5 cents worth.
