Costa Rica in '09

I am in the planning stages for a non-SMB vacation in Costa Rica early next year. Having never been there before, I am wondering if anyone had and would like to share their thoughts. We (party of 4 adults) are looking to stay 3-4 nights in La Fortuna (Arenal), and 3-4 nights in Tamarindo. Specifically looking for feedback on tour/adventure packages and operators.

Thanks

been there

Ive been there many times...

My wife and I love la fortuna... specifically tabacon... I had some of the best massages there. Tamarindo is nothing special. Its kinda like a small beach community but nothing incredible scenic. Monteverde was beautiful and worth checking out. We surfed in lots of places too -- but the roads dont exactly run along the shore. Oh yah, all the rainforest tour stuff are cheaper when you get them near la fortuna... dont go to tamarindo and then arrange a canopy / zip line tour. It will easily cost you more than double.

Why leave the SMB out of the trip?

...that sounds like a fun drive....

...but seriously, I would to do that drive sometime, and I remember reading about someone who has done it already.
