That is indeed an anomalous event and I find floods way cool. Ideally when nobody get's hurt.

But I always find it odd how it's so easy to label a hydrological event as a 1000 yr flood based on 100 years or less of meteorological observations.

If you ever drive hwy 89 between Marble Canyon and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon this one was pretty impressive last August. Check out the vid at the bottom. http://www.weather.com/news/news/huge-b ... lash-flood

Bad, but doesn't seem that atypical for a desert, heavy thunderstorm event.

Should also be a learning moment for those who like to camp in dry washes.

It will be interesting to see if there are plant species that start growing that have not been scene for 100s/1000s of years. Rain brings deserts back to life.

Man, that's a shame about Scotty's Castle. I was considering a run through DV next Summer. I wonder how quickly they will repair this sort of damage?

Thanks for sharing.

The video is very telling. However, the desert drys out very fast, especially when it gets hot, like now. I plan on traveling through DVNP next Tuesday Nov, 3rd for a few days. Scotty's Castle may not reopen for a while as the power lines down and there is tons of debris to clean up.

Regular occurrence in BAJA - clean up and move on.

This what happens in Deserts and has since long before man came along and thought they were significant enough to be counted - man that is.

I think a big difference between Baja and Death Valley is that in D/V, roads will remain closed for extended periods of time, even major ones. In Baja, they will do whatever it takes to re-open the road as soon as possible. It may not be pretty, but it will be passable, where in D/V, it seems if they can't repair to some high standard, the road remains closed, even if it's passable with a minimally prepared vehicle. I think this latest flood will make for some long detours.

Re: Death Valley's north end hit by 1000 year rain "event"

A few years back the DV Park service claimed they had the storm of the century. I got out hours before it hit and it did do some extensive damage especially to 190. They got er fixed up fairly quickly. I agree that it's just mother nature. There will always be records to break be it drought, winds, floods or any weather phenomenon. And that's whether man in in the loop or not. Back in the 1800's a rain event in California's central valley and High Sierra's caused such a heavy of flood that there were river boats reaching gold towns like LaGrange CA from San Francisco. That would be considered a total disaster of the central valley today.
Hopefully if the rains continue in DV during November-December we'll see a huge flower bloom in spring. That would be nice.
