The "Sportsmobile 4x4" stickers all over the van could quite possibly trick somebody who doesn't really understand the mechanics of these vans, which is probably most prospective SMB buyers. It never ceases to amaze me how many driver's don't know if their car is FWD or RWD, or that you can unlock the doors WITH A KEY.
Well, I agree with that, but the TITLE of the ad says doesn't say Sportsmobile, it says Ford van, and the seller plainly says "not real, clone" in the first line of the ad! Yes, the person might want the people on his/her block to think he has an SMB, but they aren't trying to trick anyone in to buying it as such. I've seen many people stick a Benz emblem on a Nissan Sentra and try to sell it as one but this isn't that at all IMO.
Anyway, I rereading my post it might sound kind of un-neighborly towards Bphin but that wasn't my intent at all. I wish the seller good luck selling a nice van. Personally I would leave the ad as is and remove the SMB stickers.

I remember many years ago in the JC Whitney catalog you could buy a fake mobile phone antenna. Maybe for some people it is merely the trappings of "status" that is important. Personally I think it would be embarrassing to go to that level of trickery. Anybody remember fake exhaust tips just hanging from the bumper... I'm sure the list of similar ruses could be made quite long.

Like the non-functional fender vents you see on quite a few vehicles these days.

I've talked to the seller, and to be sure, he is a "different" guy, who always wanted a Sportsmobile but they were too expensive for him. He bought the van from a co-worker a couple of years ago and started making his own Sportsmobile. He has done some nice things and then some head scratchers (he "knew" SMB converted V10's and Diesels so he put a V!0 badge on) nothing malacious, just "Faux SMB".

Yeah his listing clearly says "5.4 V8" and "not 4x4"

No hard feelings 86Scotty, that's the great thing about this and any other forum, we can have differing opinions and each express them respectfully. I can see your point of view and respect your opinion, even if it differs from mine.

Re: Desperation or Trickery? Either way pathetic

People see my penthouse top and say " look it's a Sportsmobile " I correct them and tell them it's only the top. If I ever sell I will sell as as a poptop. Not SMB.

Re: Desperation or Trickery? Either way pathetic

Makes me think with a sheet of plywood and a little effort one could do a fake pop top to real capture the complete SMB character!

Re: Desperation or Trickery? Either way pathetic

When I picked up my 2WD Sprinter with penthouse from SMB West, it had "Sportsmobile" stickers on it. I did not request the stickers. Seems to me that if it was good enough for the factory, I probably don't need to go scrape the stickers off...
If Sportsmobile says a 2WD is good enough for the moniker, I say let it stand.
