Re: Dumb is as dumb does

I watched the video and don't buy their excuses for one moment. Trundling is probably one of man's oldest sports, and I've done my share of rock-rolling in my time. But never in a park, let alone a state or national park! It is clear as soon as you enter Goblin Valley that this is NOT the appropriate thing to do, no excuses! I think they are just putting up this front of "safety" because they got caught. Utah State Parks ought to throw the book at them, if possible.

It is particularly sad that this is the second time in recent years that the Boy Scouts have been involved in vandalism of a natural area in Utah that has made national news. The last incident was at Red Fleet Reservoir when they tossed dinosaur tracks into the water. I think a hefty fine and a bunch of community service in the area they trashed would be a good punishment and hopefully make the next bozos think twice.

Great word. You expanded my vocabulary today. Thanks.

I've done my share too. Not a sin or a crime as long as you can be absolutely sure there's no persons or property below you. But trundling and knocking down a hoodoo are too different things. These guys should be 'knocked down' for the 'safety' of the park.

If Native Americans had pushed over that rock 200 years ago, would it have been wrong?

They rolled rocks to honor the gods. I hear they did get in trouble for graffiti on the rocks though.

Just a guess why many formations like these are around is with many American Native cultures unique rock formations were considered quite a bit differently than a large rock sitting on the ground. I could be wrong though.

Yes. From what little I know of Indian culture, it would have been wrong by their standards also.

Such an unusual place would have been treated with respect and/or fear depending on what legend their ancestors had cooked up to explain it.

Wasn't some Chief looking for his lost son?
