Earthquake question to the CA SMB'ers

I just watched a CNN clip where a USGS official said that in California there's a 5% chance that any earthquake will be followed by a larger one within three days. Since Southern CA just had a 5.1 quake do you bother to re-check your preparations or is something you're always aware of?

Re: Earthquake question to the CA SMB'ers

Didn't feel the most recent one myself.

We make sure not to place heavy, fragile objet high up where they will fall.
We have a box of MREs, we have plenty of canned/dry foods, we have multiple ways of cooking food and boiling water. We need more water on hand, though we have a number of (backpacking) water filters, we need to keep extra fuel on hand.

I had just changed out the water supply and double checked the food the day before and the Only thing short was the dog food.

Keep the SMB stocked with food and water - it is the emergency backup!

Ours is always ready to go - just need to fill the water and buy propane and we are gone. If I can just find the keys.

This is my habit too. Also have a load of supplies in the garage.

Re: Earthquake question to the CA SMB'ers

Keep in mind that much of the damage that you see on television is things falling off shelves in grocery stores, unreinforced masonry walls or fences coming down, etc. (You won't see many brick houses in California.) If you have a regular wood-framed house with the sills bolted to the concrete foundation, the typical homeowner isn't going to need to worry much. We were 20 miles from the epicenter of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and not even a picture came off of the wall in our house.

That said, our van is always stocked with several days-worth of food, the water tank is full, and I like to keep the gas tank at least 1/2 to 3/4 full. (We have dual 28 gal tanks.)

At least earthquakes don't have a season like tornadoes and hurricanes! Those things scare the heck out of me!

Tsunamis for us on the left coast but really I think fires caused by ruptured gas lines are more of a concern than the EQ itself

People are more of a concern to me than anything Mother Nature can dish out - Southern California or any major population in a disaster is going to get dangerous.
