Elevation profile for roads

Anyone know of any online resources for trip planning that will show elevation profiles for roads? Just about every time I tow, especially if it's on roads I haven't traveled before, I wonder if choosing the route with the least extreme elevation changes. Yeah, I know that the total elevation change is the same, but I'd much rather tow up and down with the least rate-of-change as possible.

I think an old topo program I had (for backpacking trails) would print out an elevation profile for each trail, and something like that would be good to know for towing too.

Re: Elevation profile for roads

My old garmin (GPSMAP76C) has MapSource and I have topo maps for the whole country. It's just an electronic topo map, so no more than a visual aid but something like that might help.

Re: Elevation profile for roads

The DeLorme Topo software (latest North America is 9.0) can do trip routing with profiles. It shows a graphic display, as well as calculating the total climbing and descending distances, the max elevation gain and total accumulated elevation gain and loss. Also will track with a GPS.
