Espar D2 Airtronic Heaters
Hey SMB Forum, I have researched and shopped hard for the best diesel van heater. I purchased the Espar D2 unit, high altitude kit and muffler with brackets. I dealt with Aaron at Esparparts.com and he was as knowledgable as he was nice. I am into this unit out the door with shipping for $1,362.52. Parts only. I am self installing with help from a mechanic friend of mine. Aaron at esparparts said they deal with DIY van building retro fitters all the time and the vast majority of them have zero issues. Keep in mind my first quote from the Espar factory authorizized dealer thermoking in Denver was 2,400.00 parts and 3,200 installed.

Not a bad deal and if you run into any install issues, hit this forum up. Plenty of folks who have installed these here.
I did my own B4 on my gasser. I love it. It cranks.

I've gotten tons of help and suggestions here so I am always willing to pass on what little I know.
The Espar install is fairly simple. Hardest part will be dropping your tank to add the pickup and fitting all those little fuel lines in the hose connections.

Hope i'm not off base on this, but after talking with Espar a year ago, I vaguely remember them mentioning the importance of the unit installed at a specified angle to work properly...surely that would be specified in the instructions. Believe this has also been referenced a couple times on the Forum in others build threads.

I installed my D4 years ago and still is running perfect.
If the gas tank is empty, the install will be ok.

It certainly is and certainly worth repeating.
My espar is one of the best parts of my build and essential. We camp all year with the kids and having a nice warm van at night is pretty sensational. My wife would stab me if she was cold at night, lol, and I would deserve it. Last trip it hit 30's at night at altitude.....so I cranked it up and everyone slept nice.

One install tip - make sure the fuel pick up tube extends to nearly the bottom of your tank! There were some installs where the pickups suck air with a quarter of a tank left. Imho, if I am stuck and it is cold, I want run my heater as long as I can. I would be pretty upset knowing there were 10 gals left in the tank that I would have to jump through hoops to get to keep the heater running.
These things use .03 gals of diesel fuel per hr. Yes, point zero three. 10 gals of fuel is a lot of hours of warmth in a survival situation. Just sayin’

Espar D2
I so appreciate the input and will take all I can get. Here is a picture of where I’ am considering installing it in my 2008 ford E350 6.0 Diesel SMB. I have scoured the web for installation videos and have watched all of them I could find. I also have read the Espar D2 manual. I am very concerned of drilling thru my floor and screwing it up so I intend to measure twice and cut once. The pictures show a spot under my dinette bench that appears to be perfect. It would be easy to install the vent for the hot air and right in the middle of the van, also the fuse box and house batteries are right there. Directly below is the diesel fuel tank on the drivers side. I am trying to figure out if o have an auxiliary fuel line. If anyone has installed this heater on a ford e 350 or if you have any pictures or advice to share I would really appreciate it.

More excellent advice and I am so grateful for it. I told my salesman I would read his installation manual but would be checking with our forum experts.
