I just got back from spending a week in Crouch Idaho. The Garden Valley store has a great selection of canned beers. Cans you ask? If you're spending time on the river in an inflatable boat cans are the only way to go.

Wow John...thanks. I'm with you, bottles sure taste better but I'd rather have a good canned beer over a crummy bottled beer. I took a case of micro brew bottle beers to the hills in my SMB trailer and when we made camp (itching for some refreshments) I opened my ice chest to find foam and broken glass I love that ranger IPA but any of those are great.

Interesting article, but like much of media hype, it attempts to define a situation in a very one dimensional, one-sided way. Contract brewing is a fact of life, and has been for many, many years. It's cheaper to brew in nuerous locations than to transport beer. Now when they start changing recipes, that's another story. The article also mentions reducing the amount of hops in beer as a cost cutting strategy. While technically correct, much of the changes in the past were driven primarily by worldwide hop shortages that started about five years ago. Many breweries changed their recipes to reduce the amount of hops that went into each batch to try to compensate.

Interesting article from a ruthless, cost-cutting, corporate, conglomerate business perspective, but a "Plot to Destroy America's Beer" it just lunacy.

The company says it cut back on its hops purchase because they had a surplus a needed a couple of years to work it off. It also describes cutting out small suppliers, closing breweries and buying allegedly lower quality ingredients. The article doesn't reach the conclusions offered by the headline writers but it reinforced my bias that, as you say, we should . . .

I usually buy whatever local microbrew is on sale, and my favorites are:

1. Deschutes Twilight summer ale
2. Deschutes Mirror Pond
3. Full Sail Amber
4. Deschutes Jubelale (enjoying this right now)

But really, we're pretty lucky in Oregon to have dozens or even hundreds of great beers. Ambers, porters, stouts, IPAs, hefeweizens, sometimes it's hard to choose. And then, when it's time for a change, a Corona with lime is great. One that I haven't had in a long time is Belekin, the beer of Belize. Can't seem to find it outside of Belize.

Funny story. My brother, northleftcoast, swears by PBR as a kayaker and paraglider. Several years ago, we did a blind taste test of several beers. Coors Light, Bud Light, Bud, MGD, Miller Light, Natural Light, PBR, and some others. We rated each one, including comments. Now - remember this was blind - my brother's comment on PBR was, "tastes like a$$". What a shock when we went through the reveal! He still drinks PBR - apparently a$$ tastes good.

PBR's do seem to be a favorite of the kayaker crowd. They are also my cheap go to river beer.

If you ever need help carrying a raft and there is a group of kayakers hanging around all you need to do is klink a couple of PBR cans together and they come running.

That sounds more like a taste test that will make you go blind...

I'm a huge fan of Deschutes brewery. They make phenomenal beers and their special releases are always great. I was actually drinking their Hop Trip last night and the Red Chair NW Pale Ale is another favorite.

Speaking of Deschutes, I have always liked their Black Butte Porter and Obsidian Stout. However my favorite stout by far is Old Rasputin Stout from North Coast Brewing. I am also a big fan of Lagunitas beers. Little Sumpin, Sumpin is very tasty as was their Lucky 13.
