Feels like California...

Bugged out at 2:30 today due to wildfires. Got a call, threw some gluten free bread and cheese in a bag with drinks, then cat, litter and wife went in the Sportsmobile. Rrr, rrr, rrr... starters dead. Good timing. Flipped the separator switch under the seat and fired right up. Felt like we were dawdling, but we were one of the first people to make it to the fairgrounds shelter- the gates weren't open and there was only one Red Cross guy there who didn't seem to have a clue about what was happening.

We signed in, left there and ran errands. Four hours later swung by home, or tried to- cops blocking all the entrances. Had a nice chat with the guys closing off our street and asked to go get my coat, since I'd left without one (we got snow and rain and sun all in the four hours we'd been away). Nice guy, he obliged us and we took full advantage- spent 5 minutes gathering blankets, pillows and some better scratch for dinner. Also grabbed my coat. 10:36 barricade to barricade.

Spent another 2.5 hours at an open space park where we walk, sun went down as we were pulling in and the last people were pulling out. We popped the top and had a nice dinner, hung out and arranged things that we tossed in a hurry. At 9:15 pm we swung back by to find the entrances clear of police and returned home.

The only thing we were really lacking was water, as the SMB is still winterized (did I mention snow?) I didn't have a coat, but there were some options in the van if I got desperate enough. Pretty glad we don't have to stay out overnight, but I wouldn't mind camping in the SMB all the same. As always the cat handled it the best of all of us.

Re: Feels like California...

Glad your house and family are safe. I went through the fire at Laguna Beach, California, several years ago where hundreds of homes were destroyed. A fireman came into the hotel where I was conducting an executive development seminar and told us to get out now. I told him we needed to grab our stuff. He yelled "GET OUT NOW!!! As we went out the front door the fire engulfed the back door of the hotel. I was driving out through the flames and flying embers. I don't want to ever go through that again. I wish you the best!
