Re: Firewood - pre bundled and rainproof

We once were stopped bring firewood into Canada. So, I stopped carrying anything but lumber.

Firewood - pre bundled and rainproof

Was going to mention that ... don't attempt to cross the border with firewood, in either direction. The irony is we (BC) ship millions of board feet of raw logs to the U.S. each year.

Re: Firewood - pre bundled and rainproof

What is it about lumber that makes it okay to transport?

I know that pressure treated lumber has no bugs, but has nifty cancer-causing chemicals (arsenic for pressure treated, formaldehyde for particle board) that probably shouldn't get burned.

Re: Firewood - pre bundled and rainproof

The bugs and parasites are mostly in the bark.

We make wooden shipping containers, and cannot have anything but bare wood - no bark or the dark coloring under the bark. So, lumber cut from the outer parts of the wood get a grinder taken to them before we can use it.

The funny thing is that tons of almond wood gets shipped to places like LA and the Bay area from the central valley orchards every year. It usually sits for a year before it leaves for the coastal regions.

The Asian Longhorn Beetle that is decimating East Coast trees got her in wooden Chinese shipping boxes.

And now, any wooden shipping crates have to be certified 'Heat Treated' to cross borders. Heat is only 200-300 degrees, enough to kill bugs and not start a fire.

Re: Firewood - pre bundled and rainproof

The worst is showing up and getting green firewood from the local campground/rv place/gas station. I'd say second is the stuff that is not green is suited for a wood stove but not a fire- slow burning coal wood, not flames. Seems like we're always on a quest to have wood that is suited for a camp fire.

I keep all the scraps from any wood projects for starting, but I don't have access to bigger cutoffs as anything above 4" long is "project grade" in my house...

Re: Firewood - pre bundled and rainproof

I saw a news report about a guy that has his heating fuel delivered by a uniformed government employee. He gets on every junk mail list he can and burns it for fuel.
