The majority of the free sites listed are fairly remote. THat is why they are free! I have a book of free campsites that I have used for years and found some really cool spots. I've also found some really trashed beer drinkin gun shooting leave your garbage spots as well, unfortunatly.

I haven't seen a unified policy, however in many places local ordinances prevent Wal-mart from allowing overnight stays. You should always ask, just to CYA.

I've boondocked at the Highlands Ranch Wal-mart for two nights back to back (touring Denver) and not had a problem, but I've also seen people ticketed at the same location. Local ordinance.

use the tool bar on the free camping web site that says no overnight parking, it gives a list of wal mart stores that do not allow overnight parking
