Graveyards
One of the things I like to do when touring around is to visit local graveyards and observe the differences in headstone style from one area to another and over time.
In addition to a persons name and life dates, many contain a snappy epigram. Here's a collection of my favorites.
On the grave of a school teacher near Alturas, CA:
If you can read this, thank her.
On the grave of a 2 year old child named Oscar George in Tuscarora, NV, his dates and:
Bye, Bye Baby Oscar
On a miners grave in the same cemetery his widow inscribed:
Tis hard to cut the tender cord when love has bound the heart.
Tis hard, so hard to speak the words, "We must forever part."
On the grave of a couple in rural North Carolina, the man having spent a long career in the Coast Guard:
Well here we are again
Just you and me.
On a grave in Ely, NV:
Thanks for stopping by.
I've seen this one both in Eugene, OR and New Zealand:
Harken sir as you pass by
As you are now, so once was I
As I am now, you soon shall be
So be prepared to follow me.
On a grave in Junction, UT:
Upright and just in all his ways
A shining light in degenerate days
This guy died in 1900 when we had barely scratched the surface on degeneracy.
