You know I'm willing to test solutions on my F250, if you want to send me a kit I can let you know if it works before risking the VW lens.

A local bodyshop called Chip Magic has a process they follow up with a clearcoat to restore headlight lenses which is what got me thinking about it.

I've restored several lenses and plastic windshields with both over the counter kits and polishing compounds. From my experiance, the kits do a pretty good job removing scratches. It the plastic is an optical lens, it will also change the "prescription" as it removes some of the plastic.
As far as aged yellowing, if it's just on the surface, it might work. If the yellowing is more then skin deep, I don't think there's any way of cleaning it up. Time to spend the big bucks....
