Some really great spots in this thread. Alabama hills camping/whitney portal, saddlebag lake (tioga), and a bunch of others! The UltimateUSPublicCampground app is astounding in its depth...Makes one a bit itchy to get out to that area. South of Carson from Lone Pine up one can just pick a road west up into the Sierras and go till the temps say stop

I've seen some nice foliage near Bridgeport as well; I think we camped up at Buckeye. Some hot springs near the campground, and of course hot springs just off 395 at Travertine Hot Springs.

A couple of additions to consider:

In Bishop, Great Basin Bakery has always been our goto place for goodies, especially their cinnamon rolls (if you get there early in the day before they're gone). Also, if you want a fantastic burger and shake it's Bishop Burger Barn. Both places are a bit off the beaten path but local favorites.

As you travel south of Bishop about 10 miles, a stop at Keough's Hot Springs might fit the bill. They have a wonderful swimming pool and hot baths, all fed by hot springs located on the property. They also have a few grassy campsites with hook-ups, if you want.

For views, Virginia Lakes, Lundy Canyon (this has a wonderful hike to falls and beaver ponds), June Lake Loop, Sabrina and North Lake have already been mentioned.

You know, I might have to run over there before the leaves drop!

One of our most favorite places! Lots of dirt roads to just drive up and camp. Last time we were there the popular places (June, Convict, and Lundy lakes) were crazy PACKED with photographers, but there are beautiful places off the beaten path - just got to hit the dirt roads to find them. A must restaurant is the Whoa Nellie Deli inside the Gas Station at Lee Vining. Fabulous food!!! Fun atmosphere...in a gas station of all places.
The Mobil Devils Postpile National Monument is pretty cool: https://www.nps.gov/depo/index.htm and the Obsidian Dome is surreal: Exploring Mammoth: Obsidian Dome

This is a fantastic thread, with a lot of great info.

However, many of the campgrounds mentioned are already closed for the season or closing very soon.

So....is a closed campground truly "off limits" or are you free to enter and camp at your own risk?

What are the alternatives to closed campgrounds? Dispersed camping / BLM ?
