I....I just can't take it anymore.

Paid my diesel bill on Friday. Six Bens down the drain. I've got to quit driving my SMB on a daily basis. Change of plans and I'm not gonna not restore my one remaining VW convertible, then start driving it. Rather, going to take a long weekend and upgrade suspension, add front disc brakes, new tires, and start driving it as is. Sure, the car has an "Earth roof", but no time to do a body-off full resto and install new floors. Sure, the convertible top has more white duct tape on it than orig vinyl, but so be it. Frustratingly, I have everything to do the complete resto and do it right, but these fuel prices demand immediate action. Immediate I say! I'm gonna look like a burned out old hippy English Lit professor driving this Bug in this condition. Oh well. At least I don't have elbow pads on any of my sport coats or suits.

Most days, it seems, I have to pick up the other great expense in my life (kids) from day care/school. If Steib hacks weren't so expensive, I could see picking up an old airhead BMW and mating a Steib to it. Kids would love to ride in a sidecar and I'd sure to be voted the coolest dad by the kids at the grade school. Always wanted a side hack.

Other problem with riding my bike(s) is I have to wear "fancy clothes" to work (my work shoes all have shifter marks on them). My riding pants are a little too snug to wear over my work clothes (who knew nylon could shrink...ok, I've gotten fat over the past couple of years) and the wet months are not far off. Kids are going to the grandparents for a couple of days, so I'll be riding the rest of the week (if my pos shoulder doesn't bug me too much).

Nope, looks like I'll be driving the polar opposite of a SMB to work soon (Bug). On the upside, if people think drivers of big 4x4s are compensating for something, what will they think when I'm driving a little convertible Bug??

How long is your round trip commute?

Maybe that VW needs to be converted to electric to help you save pennies for more diesel fuel....???

Some days is 30-40 miles. Some days, the bad days, its closer to 90 miles.

Road my BMW today. The County had chip sealed the roads near my house in the early Summer. They finally sweeped them, so riding isn't a bad deal now. I've got a lot of tar to remove from the Sporty though after this Summer.
