We never thought we'd be one of "those" parents who used a DVD player to distract our kid while we drove. Hahh! If nothing else, we can probably drive for 3-4 hours at a stretch versus 1-2 hours, making much better time. I still really don't like using it to distract our 2.5 year old, but the realities of making much better time while driving won out over the philosophical arguments. We only have one child, so no advice to offer you there, except maybe you want something with a video game input so they can battle each other virtually when they get a little older.

P.S. We also have a small portable one we use on airplane trips. Don't tell anyone.

I know what you mean about being one of "those" parents. We have family on the East Coast and have long flights. I looked on the Berkeley Parenting Network website to get what I thought would be more "earthy crunchy" ideas for keeping kids occupied on long trips--and there were a LOT of entries suggesting Benadryl and even more swearing by DVD players! So far I've somehow avoided TV/DVDs with our 22 month olds, but I think we're getting closer (especially since they climb everything to get to the TV remote, etc.).

Good idea on the gaming thing too.

For us, a pair of Sony DS game thingys keep the kids occupied. However, their favorite, Super Mario Bros, has a two player mode wherein the two units connect wirelessly and the kids play together. So, one ends up killing the other every time and the the virtual assault become a real assault. I just can't win.
