I'm just here to live through you guys...

Hi everyone. 27/m from Southern California, here. I love Sportsmobiles. I take multiple trips to the Sierras every year, and I always get a thrill when I see them. I also get a nasty jealously that won't go away. I figure that I might become bitter if I stick around talking about toys I can't afford, or it might be therapeutic

Anyway, hopefully someday I'll have one of these to call my own. Meanwhile, I can come to understand them better, and plan for the future.

Re: I'm just here to live through you guys...

Mine started as a FLTRI fund (Harley) that I wanted but did not want to make payments to a bank so each month I made a payment to me and 10years later I found Jiminy.

Oh ya the Harley. did not get the pretty new road glide but a panhead older the I am. It was a good friends that passed away and the money went to his girls college fund so it's even better. I do wish for a button start but if you can't kick it over you should not ride is what my father said when I wanted his 500 yamaha at 13 years old.

Yeah, I'm starting to get that feeling.

I'm starting to think buying an older 4x4 van and doing some of the work myself might be the way to go. Problem is, I won't have that nice Penthouse top, which is definitely something I would want. I want to be able to stand up inside.

Realistically, what is the lowest price I should hope for? I don't mind buying an older SMB if its in good shape. It just has to have 4x4 and a PH. I can add in the other stuff as I go along. I would definitely prefer a diesel, too, but if I'm looking for older ones, I'd probably have to go gasser.

Don't rule out a 2wd van & doing your own 4x4 conversion. I know a guy that can help you with that.

You'll never know what you might find in the classified sections. Members post links to vans that are for sale all the time. Most seem to run between 40-80K but it really depends on what options they have. Sportsmobile will put a top on an older vehicle if it meets their requirements, but most of the vans in those sections are usually the typical SMB. Still you could get lucky and find a stripped down 2WD keeper that SMB might put a top on. Then do like Chris said...have an aftermarket 4x4 conversion done.
Good luck.

I'd say 2wd with the top already, then just dial back the vintage to meet your budget + 4x4 and you don't have to worry about putting the money and fit into a top. There's also the option of DIY westy or vw top on a fullsize.

Re: I'm just here to live through you guys...

Agree with Jage on this for sure - find a nice mid 90's 2wd on the cheap with a penthouse. I would personally go for a Ford so you have an easier option to do a 4x4 (Ujoint or other) upgrade down the road, but a stock Econoline has pretty decent clearance and a good set of tires will go a long way to get you where you need to go.

Additionally, if a fixed top would fit the bill I wouldn't rule that out. You may find some more economical options and even one that is already a 4x4 on a reasonable budget.

Fixed or poptop, I agree that the ability to stand up and move about is huge.

Would it help your obsession to buy me a set of Bilstein's for my van? I'll put your picture on one of them, like a sponsored child in a developing country.
