I don't see how an $80/yr plan can do any better than being a welfare case. Appendicitis would invoke mandatory emergency care service even if you had no way to pay for it. And they can't take away your primary residence - as far as I know, that's the law.
Our country's got major health care cost problems and insurance is only one part of the problem. I'm happily subsidizing seriously sick people, hoping I never need to use my coverage for anything other than routine maintenance (which doesn't cost anywhere near what I'm forking out, even with generous employer contributions). As for my unemployed partner, that insurance is really costing me! And it's worth every bit of peace of mind which is what I'm hoping insurance will ever be worth to me.
