Living well on $11,000 per year
Interesting article:
http://financiallyfit.yahoo.com/finance ... 000-a-year
Of course it was the van that caught my attention. Just think of the interesting places he could live if he had 4WD on that thing!

From the article: "I eat a lot of grass-fed meats".
At only $11,00 a year I wounder if groundhog is one of them?

Been there. Done that. Not sure I would do it again. It can get very lonely and you are not helping/serving life.

Re: Living well on $11,000 per year
Let's see. He spends less then $920 a month but spends $300 a month on gas? $80 a month health plan?? Man where did he get that?
I think we are paying over $11k a year just for health insurance for the two of us. My wife spends at least $300 a month just on meds.

I hear that. Giving back is part of life too. Especially when we burn enough gas in a year to support a small country! I lived on about 8-9k a year for TOO long, glad to have a steady job.

Re: Living well on $11,000 per year
I'm with you LenS, where on earth can you buy US health Insurance for $80/month? On the planet I live on, reasonable quality insurance is more like $350-500/month for a single person and that's with a healthy deductible. That would eat a fairly significant hole in your $11,000/year. You wouldn't be eating much grass-fed beef on the $5,000 you'd have left over from your annual wages, and that's assuming you don't actually get sick and need the insurance and have to pay deductibles/co-pays etc.

Re: Living well on $11,000 per year
An in context tangent
While my wife and i are in the upper-middle-class income category we've chosen to live simply. Not quite $1K a month "simply", though our total housing expense (inc.all utilities/net/phone/etc) is under that amount. By the end of the year we will have also made the transition back into living full time in an RV. Granted it is a nice one at 38feet, solid wood everything, and more organizational-space than we currently have in our ~100 year old country home...but at less than 400 square feet it sure fits under the " Tiny House" category we enjoy. It's been ~26 years since we were able to live in an RV full time (kids came along-and happy they did- and happy they are also happily on their own. Did i say i was happy? : )
Anywhoo, our lifestyle is one of simply living with less "stuff" size and quantity by choice. Though not for everyone, it suits us perfect.
Cheers,
Thom

Living well on $11,000 per year
I think some of y'all need to read that a little more carefully. He claims to live on $11K a year. I'm pretty sure that he's earning more than that.
He's saving, investing and he's self employed. That leaves a lot open to interpretation.

Re: Living well on $11,000 per year
That's right Silver. His EXPENSES are under 11 grand per year. The article isn't commenting on his income.
