Seems like Crane Flat campground has plenty of available spots. Some at Wawona as well. Both these sites are not in the valley, but relatively near by it seems.
Crane Flat camps are fairly cramped in regard to your neighbor if that bothers you, while Wawona can get warm in July/August. Sometimes you just gotta grab what you can

Another one worth noting, not really in a good way. Summerdale (Forest Service) CG just north of Fish Camp. Skip it. Cramped, not very pretty, and a totally obtrusive host.

We were just there and without a reservation. Fantastic bike riding area for families. Definitely go out to Mirror Lake and to Cathedral Beach. There were openings at Housekeeping Camp... but expensive. However, anyone can take nice showers there for $5 each (they provide towels, shampoo and soap). A decent free camping spot is at the end of Mt Raymond road really close to the Wanona entrance. In the winter, it's a snow play area. We also stayed 2 nights at North Pines in the Valley by getting to the reservation office in Half Dome Village/ aka Camp Curry EARLY to snag a cancellation which are released each day at 3p but you need to be there EARLY in the a.m.(they open at 8a but there's a line at the door waiting when they open. It's not easy but if you're determined it works. Waterfalls are GUSHING! Tamarack Flat might work for you but it's a truck to the valley. Valley traffic is horrendous. Go early and leave late & use your vehicle as little as possible. That said... WORTH the trouble. A side note... the waterfall hike at Hetch Hetchy was our top favorite of the trip.

Is this the Goat Meadow Snow Play Area, by chance? I haven't been but was googling info/directions based on your comment. Can you offer more details about this spot?

Thanks!

Yes, that's it! Enjoyed it. If you want a campfire you need a permit from the USFS. Re Goat Meadow snowplay area.

Big parking lot area where kids play, plus surrounded by areas along the edges where you can pull in and set up a tent. We stayed there 2 nights and noticed several people left their tents and trailers there during the day while they went off hiking and sightseeing. Decent spot, but take precaution for mosquitos. Hope that helps.
