Nice!
Being an old VW guy myself, I have s oft spot in my heart for the old VW buses.
I know to never underestimate 2wd splitty busses. The light weight, engine in the back, those reduction gears give the rear more ground clearance (The Unimog guys used the same). If you prepare well, you can beat the stuffin' out of 'em, and they just keep going.
I've taken VW's all over the place, I've piloted different spit window VW buses on 3 different Shasta Snow Trips, a pretty well know event in VW circles that starts in Clear Lake, ends at the base of Mt. Shasta, with a goal of getting there without touching 'the super slab' and staying mostly on fire trails and forest roads (there's some pretty good video on youtube, a few write ups in car magazines). 6000ft passes, 2ft deep creek crossings, snow and ice, etc. About 5 years ago, this lifted big tired 4x4 Toyota truck try to follow us down a narrow snow covered road, about 18" deep. The truck got stuck, also in our tracks! One of my VW buddies tossed him a strap and pulled him out! Fun to brag about, and true.
