All the surrounding land is wilderness, pueblo or land grant so there are not a lot of back country roads. They tend to be on the other side of the river, closer to Colorado.

Agreed, and home to some sweet trails to the high country below Truchas Peaks.
You can also continue the high road past Peñasco and turn towards Mora for some back country access. The road from Mora to Angel Fire has some open areas, esp. at the northern end approaching Black Lakes. Coyote Creek State Park on that road is quiet. But all these sites may be a bit far afield for Herb's itinerary.

Great input everybody, much appreciated.
I think I'll be including Chaco Canyon even though mid-August will be hot, along with the potential of Monsoon weather. For anyone who has camped there, any particular campsites that you prefer? I'm thinking that the ones on the east side of the campground might have at least some potential for winds being partially blocked by the canyon walls, but I'm not expecting much in the way of shelter.
thanks,
Herb

Didn't camp there, but try not to miss touring Taos Pueblo. It opened my eyes to the culture and was an experience that remains a highlight after many years.

Wouldn't you freakin' know it, the one local Charter school we were on the waiting list for, called today and said my son has a spot, and oh-by-the-way school starts tomorrow (they're more or less a year-round school with a number of 2 week breaks throughout the year, plus all of June off). Summer vacation plans out the window, just as I was about to make reservations this week.
He does have 2 weeks off in late September, so as long as I can keep my business trips out of that part of September I will hopefully be able push everything back to that time, and it should be much cooler as well. Not sure if the air and water temps will make a raft trip a good idea though.

Murphy's Law.
Rafting probably out in September due to lack of H2O. Can't help with Chaco camping but you might find Anna Sofaer's work interesting background for your visit. She found the Sun Dagger and has continued her research on archaeoastronomy, including connections between Chaco structures and the 18-year lunar cycle. More here: Solstice Project

Thanks Don, I had planned on asking you about the end of the rafting season.

In case you're still heading north, Herb, here are some pics from a weekend earlier this month. We made a quick trip to Santa Barbara Canyon & Campground (mentioned earlier by Witoke and others) to get out of town for a couple of days--we seem to be Velcro-ed to the house of late.
Here's are two shots of the drive from Peñasco towards the campground
And our campsite
Here's the lower canyon
Two shots of a penitente morada along the way
And, for the hell of it, last night's sunset and a nearby windmill
The aspens should start changing any day now so the colors are headed for fall. We had hoped to go to Taos this weekend for early peeping but it'll have to wait a week. Hope you get out soon.
