Re: Not so typical landslide
Hello Dave
This slide is 15 miles way from my house, in the Snake River Canyon,
The worst part is 65% of the people that work in Jackson live on the other side of this slide, and now have added 135 miles a day to there commute.
They have just started to try and remove some of the dirt but it just keeps on sliding, if the road is damaged they are talking about 6months before it could be open. That's if the mountain stops sliding,
There is still a shit load of mountain to come down.
Ron

Re: Not so typical landslide
Almost like liquefaction during an earthquake; turning solid material into a semi-solid/semi-liquid.
Looks there may be a new lake after that slide blocks the river.

Re: Not so typical landslide
Is it un-green of me to want to try wheeling across it?
I was blown away by the trees waltzing by. Is there a larger area of the mountain the "stream" is pulling from?

Ron, is that on the road from Alpine to Jackson? I got a buddy on the way there and was planning to go that route.

Re: Not so typical landslide
Dave, it is on the road between Alpine and Jackson. The best way around the slide is to go west from Alpine on highway 26 into Idaho, to Swan Valley. Turn right on highway 31 (at Rainey Creek store) which will take you over to Victor, ID. From Victor, turn right at the only stop light in town onto highway 33. That will take you up and over Teton Pass and into Wilson and Jackson.
Quite a bit out of the way. Approximately 70 miles from Alpine to Jackson on that route, instead of 36 miles, but its pretty much the only way.
Mike

Yes what Mike said, Although they have started cleaning it up and should have 1 lane open by this afternoon barring any problems..
