Re: Of bears, black and brown, with or without electric fenc

I have hunted and killed my share of black bear, and have seen many shades of colors but when a black bear attacks a human its for food period. Brown Bear will usually not eat a human.
Here's one my father killed last season it was a brute of a black bear and one I had hunted for many years.

Of bears, black and brown, with or without electric fences

Was at an adult leadership camp in western Idaho a few years back. One evening just before dinner a black bear came strolling across the play field lawn. There must have been 75 people in close proximity to him and he just kept walking through like he owned the place. It was a great experience for all who saw him.

An update on the bear spray topic: packing-heat. I like the final comment on the debate about how best to use it; essentially, shut up and shoot.

Interesting article and very informative to those of us who are not usually in bear country.

I guess I understand why they do not allow bear spray in Yosemite. Seems it's considered a weapon but I'm thinking Yosemite park managers also take into effect how stupid people are around the park's black bears. National Parks in brown bear territory suggest visitors keep it handy. I always carry it in those parks but in Yosemite I feel I don't need to pack it due to the more mild nature of black bears. Still I'd rather have it on hand than be mauled. Just don't let a ranger see it.

I reckon due the amount of bears, and the amount of newby campers, if they allowed bear spray the entire valley would be a constant cloud of bear spray, as the rookies unload cans of the stuff when the see a bear 100 yards away.

Agree, and it would probably also let those same rookies think they don't need to keep a clean camp since they were now 'invincible'. Unfortunately the Government tends to treat everybody based upon the lowest common denominator of intelligence.

Oh they'll nail you in Yosemite for improper food storage in camp! I think what I've seen of lately over the last several years are people blocking the road to get out of their vehicles and walking up to bears (and other animals) to get a "selfie. I doubt many of these folks have bear spray on em but if you do something that stupid to begin with...

I work for a mall based retailer and we had someone fire off a can of bear spray in one of our stores a couple of years ago. We had to shut down that location for days & had to toss out everything in the store. The amount of cleaning that needed to be done was crazy. Even had to go up into the ventilation system to clean it out of there. I believe that store was in KY.

Two guys in camp have been charged by black bears in the last week. Both times they broke off at the last moment, or they both would have been dead. I have a close connection with Un-Cruise adventures guide Marika Powers who was severly mauled by a brown bear last month, along with guide Michael Justa. Michael rushed to Marika's defense with bear spray and said "I stood and I sprayed and it hit the bear right in the face for at least three or four seconds. Then it bit me in my right leg and knocked me down. Looking into the bears eyes which Justa described as dark, black and small, I don't recal what I was thinking. I just braced for impact. I was expecting some sort of reaction like you or I would do if we got sprayed in the face but it didn't happen. It just kept coming at me but it didn't keep attacking when I was on the ground, it just decided to walk away". I'm beginning to re-think my reliance on bear spray now, but at least we only have black bears on the job site.
