Portable CNC machine

I know that some of you are much handier than I am when it comes to wood or metal working and I thought that you might be interested in this technology.

Goliath portable CNC machine on Kickstarter and thought of you. Works on wood, sheetmetal, copper and plastic. The unit measures 15”x15”x12” and cut parts out of a 4x8 or larger panel. Here is the link.

Hmm... I ran and programed CNC equipment in a past life, in the early 1980's. It looks as though it depends on the wheels never slipping, so it doesn't loose it's 'home'. If that's the case, there is a fundamental flaw. On the other hand, if they overcame that, and it has a feedback loop so it accurately knows where it's at in X,Y, Z and rotation at all times, this router could really be a game changer for small workshops.

If you notice the guy clipping piano wire type cables to the moving head. I'm going to guess those cables go to a referencing mechanism just off the table which send the X,Y location info. The wheels looks as though they designed to slide and operate like those side walking forklifts. Clever.

Seems like this would have lent itself better to a laser engraver/cutter. No cutting forces and you would not have to worry about feed speed. It would limit your material choice but I am guessing it is already limited to thin sheet goods.

I wonder if you have a deep pocket, how it navigates that without 'falling' in?

"Goliath comes with a patented sensor system, which triangulates the position of the robot.

Thanks to radio frequency communication, the sensors continuously update the position of Goliath relative to the work area, 100 times a second. This feature ensures the target accuracy of 0.1 mm (0.004 inch) which:

1. Enables the robot to understand its position, so that the sensors can correct the route in case of loss of traction of the wheels. "

Interesting idea, but far more of a hobby machine than a serious production machine. Feed rates are going to be pretty slow due to the lack of traction, and if the cutter ever grabs (perhaps a knot in the wood?) whats to stop it from taking off in the wrong direction? Still, it's a clever idea.
