Propane heater blamed in 2 deaths at RV park

Quote:
A married couple from the Dallas area who were found dead Sunday night at a recreational vehicle park in northeastern Rusk County died of carbon monoxide poisoning, according to autopsy reports.

Matthew Thomas Rawley, 43, and his wife, Erica Nicole Rawley, 34, of Frisco were found dead around 9:30 p.m. Sunday when Rusk County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to the Gator Run RV Park in reference to a welfare concern.

According to RCSO spokeswoman Sgt. Viki Penny, the victims were expected to be leaving the park at 11 a.m. Sunday.

“When the victims did not arrive at their Denton County residence, one of the victim's sisters contacted the Rusk County Sheriff's Office, who later found the victims deceased in their trailer,” Penny said. “Both bodies were sent to Southwestern Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas pending autopsy.”

Penny said at 2 p.m. Monday, Southwestern Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas notified RCSO investigators confirming the couple's cause of death as being carbon monoxide poisoning.

Officials said the carbon monoxide came from a propane heater.
I can't find any information on what type of propane heater.

Horrible news. A nice down comforter sounds better and better.

I just bought a Coleman Black Cat for my camping trip to San O this weekend, but didn't plan on running it at night, this doubles that plan.

Very sad.

Never light up without a CO alarm (or two) in place.

Very sad news and so unnecessary. I wonder if the heater malfunctioned. Almost all modern RVs have the alarms and safeguards to prevent that from happening.

In a small (for an RV) full-size van, I'd never fire up a propane heater inside without a window opened. The heater will just consume all the available oxygen inside the van in a few hours. The more insulated and air-tight the van is, the faster it will happen. A canvas pop-top may "breathe" enough to allow this, but I'm not sure. A down comforter or a battery-powered electric blanket would be a much safer bet.

Stiggs - you should have good surf at San O. Good swell and weather predicted except for the mega high tide in the mornings.

Re: Propane heater blamed in 2 deaths at RV park

During ride home yesterday from work my coworker told me his wife's new best friends common law husband decided to stay in his toyhauler last weekend due to traffic coming back from the moutains. When he didn't call the next morning and she could't contact him, sheriff went looking for him. Found him dead. Looked like he had realized what was happening as it looked like he was in the process of getting dressed and looked like he hit his head on the cabinets. They said they think he forgot to open a vent. Brings up what kind of heater he had but I would have thought a toyhauler/camper would have had a vented heater.

One of the early symptons is loss of judgement. So you might know something is wrong but not know what to do about it.
