I started years ago using the Topomaps app. It worked well, but even the low res maps seem to use a lot of memory. I current have about 7.5 gig worth. I really like Gaia also, but am keeping Topo because I have so many great campsites pinned in it.

I use one of the newer style of suction mounts that supplements with an adhesive. Unfortunately they are one-shot type of things though. I had to move mine once and it never worked as well. Now I have to help it stay up with a small bungee cord to the plastic trim above the rear view mirror. Oh, to be clear, mine is up high just beside my rear view mirror. This is the style I bought and is a great mount for a good price:

I see it is unavailable now but it was cheap when it was. If I were to spend more I would go with the RAM mounts stuff.

Another lower-cost alternative to a Ram Mount:

For $19.95 on Amazon, we've recently found this cupholder-mounted tablet/phone mount to be excellent. Supports my iPad Air (in a burly/rugged/heavy case!) with no problem.

Android app I use is called Backcountry Navigator.

I download offline maps from https://www.openandromaps.org/en/

Many of the maps have biking/hiking trails on them too.

I've had great luck with my Ram mount. It's screwed directly to the top of the cup holder though, so it's not a mounting solution for the faint of heart.

Ok, so I'm a bonehead.

I finally got a chance to take the van out and play around with the RAM Mount, the GPS receiver and the GAIA app.

The RAM Mount worked great, the GPS receiver appeared to be working just fine, but all I could get on the GAIA map screen was "No Data Available".

After a frustrating hour of trying other maps screens, turning everything off and back on, and putting the GPS receiver in several different locations, I came home and read the instructions.

What do you mean I have to download the maps first???

Sometimes it's the most obvous things we can't see. Note that when downloading maps, you can choose the level of resolution or details. Using the highest resolution takes a lot of memory, but not using enough makes it hard to read. I'd recomend trying a small area first to determine how much detail you need for the areas you travel.
