See under your car

This "transparent bonnet" from Land Rover is pretty cool -- see under your hood while driving offroad terrain. YouTube video:

I've often thought about putting cameras under my van, but how would I keep them clean? Little windshield wipers?

Re: See under your car

Because so many Land Rover owners take their $75K SUVs off road.

Re: See under your car

I made the kick panels and floorboards in my rock buggy out of transparent lexan. It was awesome. You could look through the floor and see what your tires were climbing or you axle wasn't clearing.

Chris Marzonie (BajaTaco from Expo) put a Total Vision camera system to do exactly that.

Not sure how he kept 'em clean.

This feature is an absolute must-have so they can see all the wet leaves they are scaling on the drive between the gate and the mansion. (Apologies to Jeremy Clarkson for riffing on his line from a few years ago.)

But seriously, folks:
If you watch an F1 or IndyCar race, the on-board cameras on the roll hoops appear to have the camera inside a clear plastic cylinder. Every few seconds, the cylinder rolls up several degrees, revealing a clear view for the camera. I don't know exactly how they work, but I hypothesize that the plastic cylinder has some kind of washing/wiping system incorporated into them that allows the cylinder to keep rotating around for hours at a time.

Re: See under your car

I got a $20 little LCD screen and attached it to 12v power, a longish security cam RCA cable I had laying around, and an old std def Sony lipstick cam and bingo, camera system. Put it on a suction cup and I could put it anywhere on the van. Kinda fun to mess with, but yeah would get thrashed as a permament mount. Even backup cameras go away after about 10 minutes of Moab red dust.

They are starting to come out with wifi ones, or just use a wifi security cam that does peer to peer (the security cams generally have narrower fields of view than back up cams, and some back up cams have a "mirror" image that can't be flipped). Then you could watch it on your cell phone. "Oh look...there goes my tie rod!"
