Andrew,

I think I need bigger tires before I head to Antartica!

Some very impressive pictures on that site.

Re: Trans Antartic Expedition with 2 6x6 Econolines

I think I got the answer to what size tires to put on my E250 Sportsmobile. And I thought I was cold camping this week in 20 degree weather. Some of the pictures remind me of the old television show "Lost in Space." I think they had a similar vehicle for driving around while stranded on the planet. "Danger! Danger, Will Robinson!!!"

Re: Trans Antartic Expedition with 2 6x6 Econolines

Thought for the day: Website says they are going to drive 3600 miles across. I'm guessing there aren't very many gas stations. Very rough calculation based on my van is that the need at least 400 gallons of fuel. That is assuming that they can get my fuel milage turning 6 42" tires.

Where are they putting all of the fuel?

Yes but where was it filmed? Mac you're bringing back some memories. What a vehicle.

I've been trying to think of a name for my Sportsmobile for quite some time. Maybe I'll call it "The Chariot". Now if I could only find a silver robot to go with it.

Re: Trans Antartic Expedition with 2 6x6 Econolines

If you like to take a good book with you for those rainy days or cold evenings try: "The Last Place on Earth". The story of Scott and Amundson "race" to the south pole. Scott died (bad planning, bad equipment, not bothering to understand the environment) and Amundson made it look easy (good planning, good equipment, and learning to live in the environment). Of course Scott became famous for his hardship, suffering and dying. Amundson is half forgotten for making it look easy with skill and preparedness.

Good food for thought on preparedness, lessons in survival and leadership. Amazon has the book for about $12.

Back in my Army days I spent alot of hours driving a SUSV (Small Unit Support Vehicle) and learned to use them in all conditions. Top speed was 45mph on pavement and 30mph on dirt roads and much slower on snow or off-road.
