Re: What do you do for work/living?

I did a bunch of crappy manual labor jobs in my 20s: housepainter, longshoreman, saw mill worker, forest fire fighter.
I finally setteled on being a land survey technician for the USFS for 16 years untill my knees gave out.
Then I went back to school and got a BS in computer science. (Emphasis on the BS.)
Worked another 13 years as a GIS specialist / cartographer for a Forest Service wildlife research lab.
Laid off / retired 4 years ago.
Now my work consists of cashing pension checks and pouring the money down the gas tank of an SMB.

JoeH: I'm very happy in retirement, but I'd go back to work in a second if I could do your job. I'm going to be kayaking that bit of river in May but no one is going to pay me for it and I won't get to play with a theodolite.

cool, we'll be mapping the banks and bed from the Little Colorado River to Phantom Ranch in early to mid-May. Two weeks to go 27 miles

Stop in and say hi. We'll talk to your trip and explain what we're doing if they're interested. We run four survey crews at once and the multibeam bathymetry boat is worth checking out.

Re: What do you do for work/living?

Mechanical Engineer here. My company designs and builds large automated manufacturing equipment, usually for the local large aircraft OEM. Previously I did mechanical design for manned aircraft modification, missiles, and military UAVs.
Wife did the same before we had our son.

I love my job, but I fantasize about workamping...

Re: What do you do for work/living?

I was a mechanical engineer for several years up in the Alaskan oil patch but moved to Wyoming nearly 20 years ago. I've been a performance analyst for an investment management firm for the last 16+ years.

Dad and skier, flyfisher, biker, hiker, kayaker, shooter, shadetree SMB mechanic, etc also....

Re: What do you do for work/living?

Basically software and e-commerce executive. Last year I left my job of 15 years and started consulting. It is working out ok, just finished a 5 month gig with an Australian company (I'm Australian) working at home 2/3 the time. Between gigs right now, 3 new leads this week, and trying to keep summer free for travel!

Also I volunteer with search and rescue in WA. I do media relations as well as 4x4 stuff.
I'm on TV every few months (as I back up the sheriff's office media person) but it is not something I really look forward to!

Re: What do you do for work/living?

I like kayaking, fishing, hunting and kicking it in the woods. You are all asking how in the world can that be my work or living. To be honest I get enough money from EBT, free healthcare and several other government programs that we live quite well.

The downside is that Ujoint won't take EBT transfers or barter funds so we had to go apply for a few grants for under poor kids and vets. After getting the cash it will be easy to snap a few photos and prove something was done though. Since I have poor kids and I was a vet I figure it should be simples.

I really am surprised that I'm the only one living the dream on here...

But thanks to all you hard workers, oh and keep voting !!!!
