What is 'Off Road'?

It's a question of absolutely no import but ripe for endless discussion.

It must be more than just off pavement. A 50mph gravel county road in Nevada can't be off road.
The last mile or so into Toraweap surely is. So where do you draw the line?

Re: What is 'Off Road'?

Most of the OEMs don't even use that word. They say "off-highway" which means anything other than pavement.

I consider "off-road" to be dirt/rocks/mud/snow/sand/water which a stock 2wd vehicle probably wouldn't make it through.

You know you're "Off road" when AAA won't pick you up anymore.

Re: What is 'Off Road'?

For me, 'Off-Road' means the city/county/state/feds don't maintain it.

The last mile or two into Toroweap qualify, while the Forest Service road up to the park does not.

Re: What is 'Off Road'?

The road goes all the way to Toroweap..... However, be VERY careful about where the road ends when you get there.

(I heard the NPS doesn't let you drive to the rim anymore?)

Its all a matter of respective, like Tenzing Norgay said when asked about climbing Mount Everest with Edmund Hillary, "Very steep road".

"I love that road." Kanab Tire Dealer, about the road to Toroweap, circa 2002.

Re: What is 'Off Road'?

The road goes to the rim. You can't camp at the end anymore, it is a sightseeing and picnic area.

But, I don't think there is any maintenance past the Park boundary. If they do maintain that stretch, it is still 'Off-Road' and I will have to modify my definition.

What is 'Off Road'?

I would have to agree with Carringb's definition. Have taken my mini van on lots of off pavement adventures with no problem before I got my SMB. Now that suits my purpose.

Mike's definition is good too but he forgot to include private roads. They can be perfect or a disaster at 5 mph.

For me I would have to say that off road is the place past where I stop because of either the danger, turtling, or getting stuck halfway into it.

Off-road: Anywhere you can't or at least shouldn't take the family car...

Re: What is 'Off Road'?

when my wife and i were married ~30 years ago living in Reno... "Off Road" meant spending the weekend on part of the Rubicon in our Chevy Powered FJ40 Landcursier... Now at ~55 in our AWD van... "Off Road" is moseying on a nice fire trail in the pacific northwest seeing 2wd Honda Accords and similar coming down the trail with a mom behind the wheel and kids hanging out the windows ;-)

The parking is located 300 ft from the rim with big rocks preventing you go further...
