What is with all the 4x4 vans in Hawaii?

I'm on the big island enjoying a trip with the family. There are a lot of 4x4 Ford vans here. Some chateau, some cargo, some cargo with custom windows (SMB like). I see ads for tours to the top of Mauna Kea, so I would expect a few, but I've seen something like ten. That's way more than a typical few days in the Portland area, even counting a trip to fire station #1. Anyone know what makes the bit island of Hawaii such a 4x4 van magnet?

They have used them to tour tourists in remote areas for years. Hawaii likes to do things their own way. SPAM, universal health care, banned GMO, .....

I feel like I'm in big van heaven. High of 84, low of 73, no rain. Just like the Oregon coast.

Plus, volcano here, lava flow there, cinder cone, volcano, view of Maui and another volcano. It's like this island is one big volcano or something!

I was just there a few weeks ago, have you noticed a trend with trucks where they lift it WAY up and put small wide tires on? What good is that? It seems it would have a purpose, but I can't figure it.

^^^ like low profile, wide meats that a sports car would use, or low profile at/mud tires?

we stayed on maui a few years back for a couple weeks. the island was tacomas everywhere...and never stock. either jacked up to the moon, or slammed to earth. its like there was no happy medium, just extreme one way or the other. this was before i got bit with the 4x4 van bug, so they wernt on my radar yet

Bakersfield and Fresno are into the low profile M/T's on 22's with 12" lifts.

low pro at/mud tires are getting more and more popular here as well. on some rigs they look good, but ive always been a fan of lots of sidewall for 4x4 vehicles. low pro tires are for lowered cars.

I have seen lots of good looking, lifted rigs - lots of Wranglers, Tacomas, and some full size pickups. I saw one lifted with tiny tires. I guess I figured he had paid for the lift but was still saving for the tires, but maybe he was already done?
