Need your opinion on this.

I have a chance to get this, 2004, 6.0, a little over 8000 miles, all sorts of good stuff, and from what I see very clean.
My concern is the low activity of this van. It has had an oil change every year and has had some code work done to it. Those details have not been to clear just yet. Should I be concerned? Ive been told it gets used every couple of weeks for short trips.
Just looking for some other thoughts on this.
Thank you

Re: Need your opinion on this.

Find out the warranty status. I'd say worst case is a turbo replacement, budget for that and get it. Mine has been great since I found a dealer to actually fix it instead of turning off the check engine light repeatedly. If you're on your own dime you can take it to a real diesel mechanic that you trust.

Looks Good, Although i don't the asking $. Low miles are always a Plus. My 06 has a 100+ with NO Problems. Welcome to the Club Early. Bring it to Valley of the Fire Meetup.

Re: Need your opinion on this.

The warranty is no longer active, so I would be on my own with this. Besides the turbo the only other thing that would or could get spendy would be the bedplate re-seal if it needed it.
I was first on the list to get this but do to slow actions of my bank Im struggling to stay in the number two spot. Oh well I guess I will be sitting good when the next right one comes along. Intill then I will keep my fingers crossed and maybe it will all work out.

Re: Need your opinion on this.

Get the VIN # and get an Oasis Report from Ford. That will give you the complete history of work done by them on the van.

We have an 04 diesel and love it.

Re: Need your opinion on this.

As Jeremiah stated, the turbo may be a problem unless it has been replaced. Early 6.0's had turbos fail from 'lot rot'. That is, just sitting around. They seemed to develop some rust and then the vanes would seize. My 6.0 had early turbo problems and a warranty replacement cured that.

That's really low mileage. If I got it, I would change the oils, get a ScanGauge and have fun!

Wow, a van that nice needs to be used, not sitting in storage.

Most of the potential problems associated with non-use are well known and readily fixable. Plan for the worst and hope for the best.

Good luck.

It couldn't be any worse than the problems with diesels that ARE used a lot ...

The esteemed word of the forum panel seems to be the 6.0 should be driven hard and often. Not a cure all, but something I've tried to accept... but I still don't like to take it out as a daily driver purely from an actuarial stance. Driving it hard though, I've got mostly down pat.

Re: Need your opinion on this.

And I never drive mine hard. Mostly 60-62mph, gentle acceleration. Early on (before 10K) I had a turbo replaced (bad from the first time I drove it) and two injectors failed around 7K. The engine has been reliable until another, flukey injector failure at 90K.

Now, if the same was true of my transmission I would not have gotten a free 7yr/100K PremiumCare warranty from Ford.

Sometimes I think it is just pure luck. And the guys who got lucky and drive them hard say it is the only way to go. The guys who drive hard and have problems keep quiet.

For sure, use good (OEM) filters and change them and the oil regularly.
