New Toy for my SMB

Just added this BMW F800GS to my stable. In the process of getting it outfitted for exploration.

That's the question of the day.... The bike is around 450 - 500 lbs. Versa Haul makes a hitch mounted carrier for "sport bikes" that is rated at 600 lbs. I have to attach an extension to clear the tire and box on the back. I was considering welding on two additional anchor points to my Class IV hitch (1200 lb rated). Additionally, I was thinking about installing airbags on the rear suspension to even out the load and possibly protect the rear suspension from overloading.

The trailer in the picture has a integrated hitch that I think would get damaged from too much lateral movement. Also, the clearance is minimal at best. I've been able to take it down some basic dirt roads to campgrounds, but I've noticed some scrapes and scratches from the rocks when I'm finished. Really it's made only for the road. I've talked to the manufacturer about upping the clearance, but he did not think it was feasible.

The last thought was going with a single Kendon motorcycle trailer (I've also thought about a double trailer as I still have a 1200 GS Adventure) http://www.kendonusa.com/single_trailer.htm They have a really nice tubular steel frame and a little more ground clearance, not to mention it can also be used to haul a few other things. I see them from time to time on Craigslist for $700 - $1000. This is the option I'm leaning toward.

Is the Kendon really going to help with your clearance issue?

I think so. The "Stinger" trailer I have is REALLY close to the ground, and it has no suspension at all. I think the Kendon's at least have a leaf spring to handle some bigger holes and rocks that I know my current trailer can't. The main reason I went with the Stinger was it folded in on itself (basically three folds). It fit nicely in my garage, and it was mainly to transport my 1150RT (sold - as I use my GS Adv for what the RT did) when we traveled with a truck and cabover camper (also sold and replaced by the SMB). The Kendon has wheels that it stands up on end, and I've been able to free up space in my garage that will allow me to park the trailer in a particular space against the wall.

I'm also interested in the Kendon "Combo" trailer that looks like it might be a little more oriented toward off road. Link: http://www.kendonusa.com/combo_trailer.htm It's a little bigger, but not prohibitive for areas we go.

Re: New Toy for my SMB

Do you have to have the folding capability? For a lot less you could get a small utility trailer and have it modified for higher ground clearance.

Yes. My garage space is limited for a variety of reasons. Also there are a certain times where a stand up/fold up trailer can be useful when on the road.
