Re: Octocopter Video Platform....

I hope to bring it out to the meet up this weekend. It's been getting a lot of use lately.

Working on building another one over the next few months for different applications.

The current machine will be for low level and indoor use and the new one for high altitude use. Most likely the next one will be a pod and boom chopper with retracts and camera out front.

Re: Octocopter Video Platform....

Well I've gone and done it now...

The easiest route I could find was to get a "DJI Phantom" quadcopter, customized to carry a GoPro camera and "Fatshark Attitude SD" video transmission & goggles for FPV (first-person-view). This is so much better than what I messed around with six years ago.

Re: Octocopter Video Platform....

Do you have a business doing this photography?

I thought the FAA and California govt were cracking down on commercial photography businesses?

(COAs are only for public agencies, and getting an SAC-EC is a big production)
http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/hea ... s/coa/faq/

"Can a civilian company operate an UAS as part of a business?

Currently, civilian companies may not operate a UAS as part of a business without obtaining a Special Airworthiness Certificate - Experimental Category (SAC-EC). However, this SAC-EC is very limited in scope of operational use. Contact FAA for details or see FAA Order 8130.34."

I have been testing my quadcopter in my backyard, and working on a hexacopter.

Here is my lame video testing self-land mode:

Nice!

The DJI stuff is awesome..

We're you flying it in FPV mode?

I have the way cheaper ARDrone2, looking to upgrade.
It did the job of taking some camp portraits.

Do you have a gimbal for the camera?

Yes, the DJI Phantom seemed like the easiest way for me to get started for the kind of use I want. It's a sturdy machine, at least compared to my old DraganFly. I've lightly crashed several times, and it's been fine. And, I'm embarrassed to say I've used the automatic GPS "return to home" feature three times now when I've gotten lost up there. It's surprisingly easy to lose track of where you are.

I do mostly fly using FPV. It's easier to fly that way -- especially because you don't have to mentally rearrange the controls when you're turned in various directions. Besides, FPV is a super-cool experience!

I haven't bothered with a gimbal yet. It would be necessary if I'm going to do pro-style video, but for me I mainly just want a machine to "scout ahead" when I'm out exploring to see where the trail went, or if it's worth following. Or see my campsite from the air. So, I don't mind the camera angling when the helicopter banks.

Re: Octocopter Video Platform....

A friend of mine uses a similar contraption or maybe it's the same platform to shoot video of mtn biking in Sedona. This is worth checking out. Tomas and Tippy Dog ride the White Line.

Re: Octocopter Video Platform....

Some how is FPV achieved? Is the GoPro video transmitted to some sort of screen on the controller, and or some other display?
