Last weekend we went to Tule Hardpan in the west desert of Utah to do some landsailing. 2 photos are on the hardpan, one looking north towards Notch Peak and Ibex Crag, the other towards our home and some cheap but good tequila. The other is Gandy Warm Springs, a most amazing place to spend an afternoon when it's 105F out and too hot to sail.

Great visit to Central Oregon. Drove the loop around the Cascade Lakes area. Hadn't been in quite a while and forgot just how beautiful this area is. First stop was a little FS Campground called Fall River. It was practically empty and had the prettiest little falls. Most of the sites have access to the river where you could play in the water all day. Since it was hot as heck, that cold water was great.

Stopped for a couple of hours at Crane Prairie Reservoir. Nice little campground, boat ramp, and dock. Good fishing by all reports and great kayaking. Three mountains in the background makes it pretty majestic.

Next up was a stop at Elk Lake, where we scored the lakeside site. Enjoyed looking out at all that snow higher up. The camp itself was at 5007 feet and we're looking right at Mt. Bachelor, about 9000 ft., South Sister at 10300 ft, and Broken Top at 9100 ft.

On the way back around, I almost drove off the road when we rounded the bend on Cascade Lakes highway and saw Devils Lake. Wow! Forgot this beauty and will have to go back. Couldn't get photos due to time constraints, but you round that bend and see the most stunning blue-green clear lake ever. And the lake was so high, people were slipping their kayaks in ten feet from the highway, onto a little peninsula of water. Can't wait to take my kayak out there next time.

In all, it was a really great trip. The Oregon High Desert is gorgeous country and I like reminding myself of that every so often.

Forgot to add that we took a few offroad rides, easy to find in that area. When I had my 4x4 conversion done, John at Agile told me I would most appreciate the suspension on washboard. He was absolutely right. I was amazed at the speed we could take over some really crappy washboard and barely felt a thing. I really like the way the van handles those holes independently without bouncing around.

Great pics Otter! We were there for the first time early this summer and were bummed to find out the road wasn't completely open yet due to excessive snowfall last winter. This was June! Anyway, we left from Bend and got turned around at Mt. Bachelor so we went around south on some back roads and came out at Cane Prarie Preserve. None of the small campgrounds were open yet but we found a spot by Hosmer Lake without a 'no camping' sign and took a chance. It was a beautiful night looking at Mt. Bachelor! I want to get back there too, maybe after a less harsh winter.

Sage Creek primitive campground, Badlands Nat Park, SD. Last week. Woke up to a herd of bison right outside our van!

This is a really cool, FREE, campground in Badlands NP. No water, but they do have pit toilets there. About 8 mikes or so on light washboard to get there. One of our favorite campsites that we've stayed in over the years. We first camped there back in 1994 when we drove to Alaska, and were pleased to find that it's still basically the same.

Love the photos and glad you got to visit, especially given where you wound up. Wish I'd had time to get back into Hosmer... it's a beauty. It's so darn clear and, if you can get in a boat, there's a shallow spot where you look down and hundreds of big fish school just under the surface. Of course, no motors allowed. Which makes it one of the quietest places around. I love it back there. And there were still some snow remnants in the shadier spots in July.

Dang, I wish I'd known about that lake. I had no idea how big it was or really what was there. We had our inflatable kayak on the roof and could've launched it. The mosquitos were horrible though.

We did learn something by walking through the two closed campgrounds on Hosmer Lake the next morning though. There are some BEAUTIFUL spots there! I've got some pics somehwere. Great lakeside wooded campsites with Mt. Bachelor through the trees. Oh well, I'm probably the last to find this out.
