No 4x required on the main forest service roads in Pisgah National Forest in NC...but definitely on the side roads.
Location is in Harmon Den rec area near TN/NC border. Lots of free, dispersed camping options in the area.

After we got our dog, Bertie, we added a Vango awning tent to our SMB for some additional space when we hang out at a site for multiple days.
