Re: Welcome

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! In answer to some of the questions, please see the gallery for pics. And yes, it did come with the periscope! I have removed it because it was really taking up a lot of space, and I was worried the neighbors might think I was a perv spying on them. My intent in buying the van was to use it for going to the beach in the summer and the desert in the winter. The wife and I have kayaks hanging in the garage that have been under utilized, hopefully this well help us get off our duffs and use them more. Exploring rack options now to put the boats on top. Been perusing the site and getting lots of good ideas from you guys, thanks a bunch.

Wow, that's one big periscope, I would have removed it too, regardles of the cool-factor. I wonder what it looked like from the outside?

Way cool! That periscope looks like it was set up to mount a camera or video unit. The mind boggles - good idea to remove it, if even a normal SMB gets egged on occasion...

The periscope was indeed set up to mount a camera. In the raised position it set above the roof line about 6 inches, it wore an RV vent cover as a cap so when it was in the down position, looked like a regular vent. I found all kinds of cool things as I was chasing out the miles of wire left behind when the electronics were stripped out. To include microphones mounted behind the side marker lights and antennas mounted behind the grill. There was even a second ignition switch mounted in the electronics console in the rear so the engine could be started while in the rear of the van. Kinda old school stuff by todays standards, but probably state of the art at the time.
